Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna CPSE and one of India’s largest steel producers, has released an official notification dated 12.11.2025 for recruitment of 124 Management Trainees (Technical) in E1 grade. The posts are tentative and spread across seven engineering disciplines: Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical and Metallurgy. The recruitment will be through an Online Examination (CBT) followed by Group Discussion (GD) and Interview. Selected candidates will undergo one year of training (registered as apprentices) and one year of probation, with attractive emoluments and benefits.

Application Fee:

  • General / OBC (NCL) / EWS: ₹1,050 (includes processing fee)

  • SC / ST / PwBD / ESM / Departmental: ₹300 (processing fee)

  • Payment mode: Online (Net Banking / Credit Card / Debit Card). Bank charges, if any, are to be borne by the candidate.


Age Limit:

  • Upper age limit (General): 28 years (i.e., not born earlier than 05.12.1997)

  • Age relaxation as per rules:

    • OBC (NCL): +3 years

    • SC/ST: +5 years

    • PwBD: +10 years for General; additional relaxations for SC/ST/OBC PwBD as per notification

    • Departmental candidates: upper age limit relaxed up to 45 years (details in notification)

The eligibility w.r.t. upper age limit/qualification/category is to be reckoned as on the closing date of online application.


Educational Qualification:

  • Minimum: Full-time/regular Degree in Engineering (B.E./B.Tech) with 65% marks (average of all semesters) in any one of the following disciplines:

    • Chemical — Chemical Engineering/Technology, Electro Chemical Engineering

    • Civil — Civil Engineering

    • Computer — Computer Science / Computer Science & Engineering / Information Technology / Computer Science & Information Technology OR 3-year MCA

    • Electrical — Electrical Engineering and related branches (Power Systems, Power Plant, Electrical & Electronics, etc.)

    • Instrumentation — Electronics, Electronics & Instrumentation, Instrumentation & Control, Mechatronics, Robotics & Automation etc.

    • Mechanical — Mechanical Engineering and allied branches (Production, Industrial, Thermal, Mechatronics etc.)

    • Metallurgy — Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering/Technology, Industrial Metallurgy

  • Relaxation in marks: SC/ST/PwBD/Departmental candidates with relevant engineering degrees having 55% marks (average of all semesters) are eligible.

  • Degree must be from a University/Institution recognised by UGC/AICTE or equivalent.

  • Wherever CGPA/OGPA/letter grade is awarded, the equivalent percentage should be indicated in the online application as per institute norms. If no norms exist, CGPA/OGPA will be presumed to be out of 10; candidates must produce supporting norms during GD/Interview.

  • In addition, 7 posts are reserved horizontally for PwBD across disciplines (only OA/OL/OAL and Dwarfism categories with minimum 40% disability are eligible, as per notification).

OBC (Creamy layer) candidates must apply as General. Category once entered in the application cannot be changed.


Selection Process:

  1. Online Examination (CBT) — Tentatively Jan–Feb 2026

    • Total Marks: 200 (two parts)

      • Domain Knowledge Test: 100 marks — 40 minutes (discipline-specific)

      • Aptitude Test: 100 marks — 80 minutes consisting of 4 segments: Quantitative Aptitude, English, Reasoning and General Awareness (25 marks each)

    • Minimum qualifying percentiles to be eligible for GD & Interview: 50 percentile (UR/EWS) and 40 percentile (SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/PwBD) in each part.

  2. Group Discussion (GD) & Interview (PI)

    • Candidates qualifying the Online Exam will be shortlisted in the ratio of 1:3 (discipline & category wise) for GD & Interview.

    • Weightage: Online Exam – 75%, GD – 10%, Interview – 15%. Final merit will be drawn category-wise.

  3. Biometric Verification at Online Exam, GD/Interview and joining. Any mismatch/inconsistency may lead to rejection.

  4. Final selection will be made on combined scores and in order of merit.


Exam Pattern & Centres:

  • Pattern: Two parts (Domain + Aptitude) — total 200 marks/120 minutes. (See Selection Process above.)

  • Mode: Computer Based Test (CBT)

  • Tentative Test Centres: Bengaluru, Bhilai Nagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi/NCR, Durgapur, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Ernakulam, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mohali, Mumbai/Thane/Navi Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Prayagraj, Ranchi, Rourkela, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Vijayawada/Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Vadodara.

  • Test centre information will be printed on the admit card. Requests for change of centre will not be entertained.


Training, Probation & Emoluments:

  • Training: Selected candidates will undergo 1 year training as Management Trainee (Technical) and will be registered as Apprentices under the Apprentices Act, 1961. After successful training, candidates will be placed under one year probation.

  • Pay during training: Basic pay ₹50,000/- p.m. in the pay scale ₹50,000–1,60,000.

  • Post training designation: Assistant Manager in E1 grade with pay scale ₹60,000–1,80,000.

  • Benefits: Dearness Allowance, PF, Gratuity, Leave encashment, HRA/Company accommodation (as per rules), free medical facility for self & dependents, perquisites under cafeteria approach. Approx. CTC ≈ ₹16–17 lakhs p.a. (excluding PRP/location allowances).

  • Posting: Candidates may be posted to any Plant/Unit/Mine of SAIL. Transfer restrictions: 4 years for new recruits (2 years for departmental candidates).
